They have illustrated the desires, the fears and the different world visions of the Japanese people across the centuries. The goal of this article is to discuss some of the most popular fantastic characters belonging to Japanese literature and cinema, who have successfully crossed cultural boundaries and won their own space in the cultural representations of the western world.Item Open Access Le Roman populaire, définition et histoire: De quelques questions théoriques et pratiques sur le roman populaire(Dalhousie University. Electronic Text Centre, 2009) Rodriguez, Pilar Maria VegaThis paper analyzes the fantastic aspect of literary legends produced within Spanish Romanticism which specially focus on geographic motives. Literary legend is a new genre descended from the epic poem, which shares with it an emphasis on the marvellous and idealist characters. Geographical legends deal with fantasy in two main ways: by suggesting the sublime dimension of landscape (a prodigious or extraordinary scenery) and by introducing supernatural characters (fairies, undines, enchanted Muslim women). Travel journalism also provides other opportunities to insert literary legends. This type of texts usually follows constant features which are commented here. The best authors of the time, such as Manuel José Quintana, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer or Víctor Balaguer wrote legends in that way.Item Open Access Images de la femme dans le roman sentimental(Dalhousie University.
