Transmission electron microscopy, x-ray powder diffraction, x-ray absorption fine structure, and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy have been used to investigate the size-dependent systematics of lattice contraction and charge redistribution of these NPs. It is found that the lattice contracts and the d charge at the Au atom site depletes relative to bulk Au as the size of the NP decreases. The implication of these observations is discussed in terms of the interplay of quantum-size and surface effect.Item Open Access Fabrication of thiol-capped Pd nanoparticles: An electrochemical method(2003-03) Zhang, P.; Sham, TKNo abstract available.Item Open Access Influence of sample oxidation on the nature of optical luminescence from porous silicon(2000-07) Coulthard, I.; Antel, WJ; Freeland, JW; Sham, TK; Naftel, SJ; Zhang, P.No abstract available.Item Open Access Soft x-ray excited optical luminescence: Some recent applications(2002-03) Hu, YF; Tan, KH; Kim, PS; Zhang, P.; Naftel, SJ; Sham, TK; Coulthard, I.; Yates, BWNo abstract available.Item Open Access Nanostructured CdS prepared on porous silicon substrate: Structure, electronic, and optical properties(2002-05) Zhang, P.; Kim, PS; Sham, TKNo abstract available.Item Open Access Tailoring the local structure and electronic property of AuPd nanoparticles by selecting capping molecules.(2010) Liu, Feng; Zhang, PengNo abstract available.Item Open Access X-Ray studies of the structure and electronic behavior of alkanethiolate-capped gold nanoparticles: The interplay of size and surface effects - Reply(2004-03) Zhang, P.; Sham, TKNo abstract available.Item Open Access Multichannel detection x-ray absorption near edge structures study on the structural characteristics of dendrimer-stabilized CdS quantum dots(2001-09) Zhang, P.; Naftel, SJ; Sham, TKNo abstract available.Item Open Access Electrochemical route for the fabrication of alkanethiolate-capped gold nanoparticles(2003-03) Zhang, P.; Kim, PS; Sham, TKNo abstract available.Item Open Access Surface structural characteristics and tunable electronic properties of wet-chemically prepared Pd nanoparticles.(2008) Cook, S. Research is turning toward nanotechnol. for solns. to current limitations in biomedical imaging and anal. detection applications. New to fluorescent nanomaterials that could help advance such applications are protein-stabilized gold nanoclusters. They are potential candidates for imaging agents and sensitive fluorescence sensors because of their biocompatibility and intense photoluminescence. This review discusses the strategy for synthesizing fluorescent protein-gold nanoclusters and the characterization methods employed to study these systems. Optical properties and relevant light-emitting applications are reported to present the versatility of protein-gold nanoclusters. These new bio-nano hybrids are an exciting new system that remains to be explored in many aspects, esp. regarding the detn. of gold nanocluster local structure and the enhancement of quantum yields. Understanding how to finely tune the optical properties will be pivotal for improving fluorescence imaging and other nanocluster applications. There is a promising future for fluorescent protein-gold nanoclusters as long as research continues to uncover fundamental structure-property relationships.Item Open Access X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies of local structure and electronic properties of NaxSi136 (0 < x < 24) clathrates.(2010) Ritchie, Andrew D.; MacDonald, Mark A.; Zhang, Peng; White, Mary Anne; Beekman, Matt; Gryko, Jan; Nolas, George S.The local structure and electronic properties were probed of Na-contg. type II Si clathrates by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The near-edge region of the spectrum is particularly sensitive to the local structure surrounding the Na atom. Through exptl. studies of 8 samples NaxSi136, with x ranging from ∼0 to 21.5, and simulation of extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and x-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra (XANES), Na is primarily in the larger Si28 cages at low loadings, and loss of the Na relative to full cage occupancy occurs preferentially from the smaller Si20 cages. The EXAFS results also show that Na is dynamically disordered in the Si28 cages but less disordered at higher Na loadings. Local-orbital d. of states calcns. indicate that the Na in the Si20 cage has a charge of 0.7e- while Na in the Si28 cages has a slightly higher (loading-dependent) charge (0.72e- to 0.8e-).Item Open Access Structural and electronic properties of protein/thiolate-protected gold nanocluster with "staple" motif: A XAS, L-DOS, and XPS study.(2009) Simms, Gordon A.; Padmos, J.
