Two-dimensional metallo-dielectric photonic crystals embedded in anodic porous alumina for optical wavelengths
    (AIP, 2004-08/23) Takayama, O.; Cada, M.
A theoretical study is presented for hexagonal lattice metallic pillar photonic crystals in anodic porous alumina with a lattice constant of 500 nm. The objective of the investigation is to design a two-dimensional metallo-dielectric photonic crystal with an anodic porous alumina template. Optical responses are calculated for silver pillars of radii 100 nm, and 200 nm in porous alumina. The nature of their stop bands and attenuation in the near-infrared region is investigated. Calculations reveal that two-dimensional photonic band gaps for the TM polarization exist at visible wavelengths when the radius is 200 nm

Coupled-power theory of nonlinear distributed-feedback lasers, yielding reduced longitudinal spatial hole burning
(1998-06/22) Wang, Jing-Yi; Cada, Michael; Makino, Toshihiko
The authors present an analysis of the nonlinear distributed-feedback (DFB) laser action, derive a set of nonlinear coupled-power equations, and obtain a general condition for a nonlinear DFB laser with reduced spatial hole burning (SHB). It is found that the elimination of SHB in DFB lasers can be achieved by introducing properly chosen variations of the coupling strength along the longitudinal direction. On the basis of this, a novel complex-coupling AR-coated DFB laser diode is proposed.

Switching mirror in the CdTe-based photonic crystal
    (AIP, 2005-07/04) Cada, M.
Theoretical investigations, modeling and design of a Bragg mirror (photonic crystal structure) in the CdTe-based material system are presented. It is shown that, in addition to the third-order nonlinearity (Kerr-like effect), the two-photon absorption and the resulting free-carrier refraction have to be included in the analysis and design. Inclusion of changes in the refractive index with the square of the light intensity (fifth-order nonlinearity) leads to desirable functional features of the switching mirror. The analysis provides insight into the complex nonlinear effects and serves as a tool for designing a nonlinear intra-cavity mirror for a novel pulsed laser
