Transgressive Bodies in the Work of Julie Doucet, Fabrice Neaud and Jean-Christophe Menu: Towards a Theory of the 'AutobioBD'

Abstract

This paper draws on the autobiographical work of bande dessinée artists Fabrice Neaud, Julie Doucet and Jean-Christophe Menu with the aim of investigating the potential of the medium to disturb the normative visual order of heterocentricity and phallocracy. The paper discusses Neaud's exploration of the isolations, separations and segregations which produce and constrict the orderings and disorderings of a gayed male body in social space(s), together with his theorisation of the social politics of self and other. It considers in particular the trope of the insult, drawing on Didier Eribon's work on the insult as constitutive of gay identity. The work of the Québecoise artist Julie Doucet is discussed in relation to her refusal of the disembodied speaking voice that has often characterized male autobiographies, and her occupation of the terrain which Kristeva has called the 'abject', through her exuberant portrayal of bodily fluids. In contrast, Jean-Christophe Menu seems to resist narrative embodiment, making copious use of voiceover and distancing the body of his diegetic self from the rationality of the narrative 'I' through his disguise as a cartoon character, while the body of his wife is repeatedly represented. It is argued, however, that an apparently phallocratic occupation of socio-sexual terrain is ultimately called into question in Menu's work. The article concludes that bande dessinée has complex resources for contesting the construction of masculinity and femininity and for giving form to the autobiographical 'I'.

Cet essai traite de l'autobiographie dans les bandes dessinées des artistes Fabrice Neaud, Julie Doucet et Jean-Christophe Menu. Son but est d'identifier les capacités spécifiques de ce médium à déranger l'ordre visuel normatif hétérocentrique et phallocrate. On examine d'abord la façon que Neaud a d'explorer l'isolement, la séparation et la ségrégation qui produisent et délimitent le (dés)ordonnancement d'un corps masculin homosexuel dans les espaces sociaux, en même temps que sa théorisation de la politique sociale du soi et de l'autre. On prend en particulier en considération le trope de l'insulte, se basant sur les travaux de Didier Eribon sur l'insulte comme constituante de l'identité homosexuelle. L'analyse de l'oeuvre de l'artiste québecoise Julie Doucet examine son refus de la voix off qui a souvent caractérisé les autobiographies masculines, et son positionnement sur ce terrain que Kristeva a qualifié de l' « abject », de par sa représentation exubérante des liquides séminaux. Par contraste, Jean-Christophe Menu semble résister à tout incarnation narrative, en utilisant largement la voix off et en éloignant le corps de son « je » diégétique de la rationalité du « je » narratif, à travers un déguisement en personnage de dessin animé, alors que le corps de sa femme est représenté de façon réaliste. On suggère toutefois que dans le travail de Menu, l'occupation apparemment phallocratique du terrain socio-sexuel est pour finir mise en discussion. L'article conclut que la bande dessinée a à sa disposition des ressources complexes pour remettre en question la construction de la masculinité et de la féminité, ainsi que pour donner corps au « je » autobiographique.

Questo articolo tratta dell'opera autobiografica degli artisti del fumetto Fabrice Neaud, Julie Doucet e Jean-Christophe Menu. Il suo scopo è di investigare il potenziale del fumetto di disturbare l'ordine visivo normativo eterocentrico e fallocratico. Si esamina dapprima nel lavoro di Neaud l'esplorazione delle isolazioni, separazioni e segregazioni che producono e restringono il posizionamento di un corpo maschile omosessuale nello spazio sociale. Vi si considera in particolare il tropo dell'insulto, sulla base delle teorie di Didier Eribon sull'insulto come base costitutiva dell'identità gay. L'opera dell'artista quebecchese Julie Doucet è considerata in relazione al suo rifiuto della voce "off" che ha spesso caratterizzato l'autobiografia maschile, e del suo istallarsi in quell terreno che Kristeva ha battezzato col termine "abject", attraverso la sua rappresentazione espansiva dei fluidi corporei. In contrasto, Jean-Christophe Menu rifiuta l'incarnazione narrativa, ricorrendo abbondantemente ad una voce narrante esterna e allontanando il suo corpo diegetico dalla razionalità dell' "io" narrativo travestendosi come figura comica, mentre il corpo di sua moglie diventa l'oggetto di una rappresentazione realista. La creazione di Menu rimette tuttavia in questione l'occupazione fallocratica apparente del terreno socio-sessuale. L'articolo conclude che il fumetto dispone di risorse svariate per rimettere in discussione i costrutti della mascolinità e della femminilità e per dar forma all' "io" autobiografico.
