dc.description | The "past" participle is frequently used in French; moreover, it is abundant in specialized texts. It is this form, especially as a resource particular to scientific texts, which constitutes the subject of our thesis. | en_US |
dc.description | French grammars study the past participle first by pointing out the different values it can take and the many uses to which it can be put. It is however the agreement of the participle, with avoir mostly, which dominates grammatical thought on this form. The first two chapters of our thesis offer a synthesis of what is found on the past participle in representative works up to this day; most of all, these chapters establish the conceptual basis on which rest the analyses of the third chapter. We also propose a more systematic approach, in which this form is grasped as an element opposed to other elements within a system. | en_US |
dc.description | In the last chapter, we examine the textual functions of the past participle in a corpus of closely connected works, both in pure science and in the humanities. The past participle performs several functions and it will be seen that, depending on the syntactic environment where the form is found, it can either convey a clear and precise message or express a more ambiguous thought. | en_US |
